Experience island history
This is whale watching in a completely different way: in the "Dykhus" local history museum, you can look directly into the skeleton of the gigantic marine mammal - and also experience the eventful history of the North Sea island of Borkum from an unusual perspective. The local heritage association has prepared a beautiful selection of interesting exhibits in such a way that the living environment of the old islanders becomes tangible - and 300 years of maritime history are given a face.
The "Dykhus" (dyke house) is located just a few metres from the Old Lighthouse at the foot of what is proven to be the first dyke built on the North Sea island of Borkum. It represents the traditional type of gulf house. Two jawbones of a whale point the way into the museum, where Borkum's island history can be experienced in various departments and rooms. In the whale hall, which was also built in the Gulfhaus style a few years ago, visitors can view the 15-metre-long skeleton of a 35-tonne sperm whale that stranded on the Schleswig-Holstein coast in 1998.
There are guided tours of the "Dykhus" museum of local history every Monday at 3:00 pm and 4:30 pm. Registration is required on site during the museum's regular opening hours.
