In mid-2014, what is probably the smallest clinic in Germany re-opened with a new clinic building. In July 2014, the new island hospital with its specialist internal medicine practice with 16 beds and 8 designated beds was able to take over medical care for the people of Borkum and holidaymakers.
The site in Gartenstrasse has now become a centre for healthcare on the island. Other health experts such as speech therapists, physiotherapists and psychotherapists have settled here. The German Red Cross rescue centre is also on site and a modern helipad means that patients can be flown to the mainland at short notice if necessary.
